Closed on May 5, 1989. Merged into Activision on 13 June 1986. Infocom was an American software company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that produced numerous works of interactive fiction. Activision shut down the Infocom division in 1989, although they released some titles in the 1990s under the Infocom Zork brand.

What was Zork coded in?
Commercial versions of the game were written in a programming language called Zork Implementation Language (ZIL) that ran within a virtual machine on top of personal computers. This snippet of code, written in ZIL, is an example of the way Zork handled verbs that players typed to propel the game forward.

They have become mostly collectors’ items, and non-playability is not the sellers’ fault. A collection of Infocom games, “The Lost Treasures of Infocom”, was republished by Activision in 2012 as an app for IPhone and IPad. Sadly, it appears to have been discontinued.
