How does gemtuzumab ozogamicin work?
Gemtuzumab targets a protein called CD33. CD33 is found on the surface of some leukaemia cells and some types of developing white blood cells. Gemtuzumab locks on to the CD33 protein. It releases ozogamicin into the leukaemia cells to damage and kill them.

Gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) is an antibody-drug conjugate consisting of a monoclonal antibody targeting CD33 linked to a cytotoxic derivative of calicheamicin.
When do you use MYLOTARG?
Mylotarg is used to treat a certain type (CD33-positive) of newly-diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia in adults and children at least 1 month old. Mylotarg is also used to treat CD33-positive acute myeloid leukemia after other treatments did not work or have stopped working in adults and children at least 2 years old.
Why was gemtuzumab ozogamicin withdrawn?
The action is at the request of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after results from a recent clinical trial raised new concerns about the drug’s safety profile and also failed to demonstrate clinical benefit to patients currently enrolled in trials.
